TOURNAMENT INFONAME: KIA KOREA OPEN WHERE: SEOUL, KOREA WHEN: SEP 15 - SEP 21 TIER: International PRIZE MONEY: $500,000 SURFACE: Hard DIRECTOR: Mr. Jin-soo Lee Part of the Asian leg of the calendar, Seoul's WTA tournament launched in 2004 at Seoul Olympic Park Tennis Center, the 1988 Summer Olympics facility where Steffi Graf took the gold en route to her 'Golden Slam' season. It has also hosted South Korean Davis Cup and Fed Cup ties. Champions include Maria Sharapova, Venus Williams, Caroline Wozniacki and Agnieszka Radwanska. However, the most memorable one may be Kimiko Date-Krumm, who became the second-oldest Open Era WTA titlist with her triumph in 2009 one day shy of her 39th birthday (Billie Jean King is the oldest). The Kia Korea Open increased prize money to $500,000 and implemented Hawk-Eye electronic line calling for the 2012 edition. "The tournament is being promoted with a prize money," Tournament Director Lee Jin-Soo said. "This is the stepping stone to going from an International-level tournament to Premier-level. We plan to make it the No.1 international sports event in Korea." Official Website:kiakoreaopen.com/

WTA Korea | Finals - Order of Play & Results (21 Sept):[2] Karolina Pliskova (CZE) d [5] Varvara Lepchenko (USA) 6-3 6-7(5) 6-2 It was fourth time lucky for Karolina Pliskova on Sunday - after losing her first three WTA finals of the year at Pattaya City, Nürnberg and Hong Kong, she battled past Varvara Lepchenko to win the second WTA title of her blossoming career at the Kia Korea Open in Seoul. She had some close calls earlier in the week, including coming within two points of losing to Maria Kirilenko in the semifinals, but Pliskova survived through to the final and had to do it all over again there against Lepchenko, finding herself at a set all after just over an hour and a half on court. But the No.2-seeded Pliskova stormed out to a 4-0 lead in the third set and barely looked back, eventually beating the No.5-seeded Lepchenko after two hours and 11 minutes, 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-2. Having won her first WTA title at another WTA event in the Asia-Pacific - Kuala Lumpur last year - Pliskova had had a tough run in WTA finals this year, losing all three of those aforementioned title matches. But she crossed the finish line against Lepchenko to return to the WTA winner's circle.
